Women driving Tractors

Women have been an integral part of the agricultural workforce throughout history. In spite of this they have often been overlooked and not given the recognition they deserve. However, times are changing and women are now breaking barriers and transforming the industry.

The Koovappady Block Panchayat, situated in the heart of rural Kerala, recently concluded an eight-day training program under the Mahila Kisan Saktheekaran Pariyojana. This initiative, spearheaded by the block panchayat authorities, aims to ensure women’s active participation in farming and agricultural activities.

A group of 20 enthusiastic women hailing from the Koovappady block took part in this unique training program. The comprehensive training was divided into two batches, each consisting of ten women. All eager to learn the ins and outs of tractor operation and other essential farming skills.

In an exciting development, a millet garden is set to take root at Baselios Public School, further exemplifying the women’s commitment to sustainable agriculture. The newly trained women will play a crucial role in ploughing and maintain the garden.

The Mahila Kisan Saktheekaran Pariyojana has not only provided these women with new skills of tractor driving but also opened up avenues for them to actively contribute to the agricultural landscape of Koovappady. This initiative underlines the importance of women’s involvement in farming and empowers them to be self-reliant contributors to the agricultural sector.
