Odisha Government To Make VLT In CVs Mandatory From 2023

Recent News: Odisha Government plans to install VLT in commercial vehicles, Read on for details: 

In an attempt to introduce better safety, the Odisha government announces that Panic Buttons and Vehicle Location Tracking (VLT) devices will be equipped in all commercial vehicles plying in the State from next year. The decision has been taken as per directions issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in order to ensure the safety of commuters and also to help paramedics reach faster in case of an accident. 

What Are VLT devices? 

VLT devices or Vehicle Location Tracking (VLT) devices consist of a hardware unit equipped with a GNSS logger, and a GPRS/3G/4G integrated communication system which comes with a power supply and backup mechanism in order to track the location of commercial vehicles. 

With it installed in commercial vehicles, the Monitoring Centres (backend systems) can track the location of a vehicle in order to easily find it in case of an accident involving the vehicle to ensure faster paramedic engagement.

As per a notification by the State’s Commerce and Transport department, commercial vehicles registered on or after January 1, 2023, will need to be fitted with VLT and panic buttons during the time of registration. Also, it was made clear that the vehicles registered before December 31, 2022 or on Dec 31, 2022 must comply with the new rule and meet the specified standards within March 31, 2023. The standards for fitment of VLT and Panic Button will soon be provided. as per reports.

Further, Commerce and Transport Minister Tukuni Sahu said that in a situation of emergency, commuters or travellers need not call anyone else for rescue. The driver or passengers will be able to press the panic button in case of an emergency. Once the panic button is pressed, the location of the vehicle will be directly transmitted to the response team who will then track the vehicle for immediate rescue.

It was also pointed out that the devices will be set to be tracked from the command and control room to be established at Bhubaneswar.
