Tata Motors to showcase over dozen and half electric vehicles at Bharat Mobility Show

Tata Motors has been at the forefront of developing hydrogen fuel cell technology, aligning with global efforts to adopt cleaner energy sources. The Indian government aims to reduce the emissions intensity of its economy by 45% by 2030, positioning hydrogen as a viable alternative to fossil fuels.

In collaboration with the Government of India under the Technology Development and Demonstration Program (TDDP), Tata Motors initiated a fuel cell technology demonstrator vehicle project. Partnering with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) for system integration, testing, and certification, the company showcased India’s first fuel cell-powered bus at prominent forums like the Auto Expo.

To support this initiative, Tata Motors established a dedicated hydrogen fuel cell lab in Pune, following earlier collaborations with ISRO and the Indian Institute of Science (IISC) in Bengaluru. The company has developed hydrogen handling and onboard storage capabilities, emphasizing safety through meticulous design, integration, simulations, and testing. A dedicated hydrogen dispensing station and test track have been set up at Sanand for testing fuel cell buses.

In June 2021, Tata Motors secured a contract to supply 15 hydrogen-based proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell buses to Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), with delivery expected within 144 weeks from the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Furthering its commitment, Tata Motors unveiled two state-of-the-art R&D facilities at its Pune center in October 2023. These include an engine test cell for developing hydrogen internal combustion engines (H2ICE) and infrastructure for hydrogen fuel storage and dispensing for fuel cell and H2ICE vehicles.

Girish Wagh, Executive Director of Tata Motors, stated, “We believe hydrogen to be the fuel of the future, especially for commercial vehicles. With the opening of this dedicated R&D facility to develop and indigenize hydrogen propulsion technology, we are entering a new era of technological innovations and advancements in green mobility.”

Rajendra Petkar, President & CTO of Tata Motors, added, “This development is a testimony to Tata Motors’ continued commitment and leadership towards net zero and long-term vision for offering differentiated powertrain solutions across segments under one roof.”

At the Auto Expo 2023, Tata Motors showcased a range of commercial vehicle concepts, including the flagship Prima in two versions: one with a hydrogen internal combustion engine and another with fuel cell technology, along with the next-generation hydrogen fuel cell bus. In September 2023, the company delivered two first-of-their-kind, technologically advanced, new-generation hydrogen fuel cell-powered buses to Indian Oil Corporation as part of the 2021 tender.

Tata Prima H.55S

The Prima H.55S, a hydrogen-powered truck, was introduced by Tata in 2023. It is expected that Tata will now launch a production ready hydrogen truck at the 2025 Auto Expo.

The hydrogen powered H.55S, powered by a Cummins 6.7L engine with 290 HP and 1200 Nm of torque, has a range of 350-500 km, enabling its use in long hauls for bulk cargo, cement, and coal transport. This vehicle is fully equipped with ESC, CMS, and LDWS for safety and performance.

Starbus EV Fuel Cell

India’s first hydrogen fuel cell bus, the Starbus EV Fuel Cell was showcased earlier as a groundbreaking innovation in urban mobility. It is expected that Tata Motors will finally launch the all new bus in 2025. Highlights include:

  • Zero Emissions: Eco-friendly operations with no exhaust emissions.
  • Regenerative Braking: Energy-efficient braking system.
  • ADAS Features: Driver Monitoring, Lane Departure Warning, and Collision Avoidance systems.
  • Passenger Comfort: Customizable interiors and low-entry design.
  • Performance: Top speed of 70-75 km/h, range of 250-300 km, and a gross vehicle weight of 19.5 tonnes.

Conclusion

Tata Motors continues to lead in green technologies, investing in alternative fuel solutions such as battery-electric, hybrid, CNG, LNG, hydrogen ICE, and hydrogen fuel cell technologies, driving India’s transition towards sustainable mobility.
