Trial Run Of Electric Bus From Delhi To Jaipur Commences

In a recent development, to enhance sustainable means of intercity transportation which is affordable and reliable for customers, a trial run of an electric bus from Delhi to Jaipur was conducted. The project was commenced with the involvement of Delhi Research Implementation and Innovation- an initiative by the Government of India, and IIT Delhi under the National Highway for Electric Vehicles (NHEV) project.

Further, over the next few months time, the plan will be analysed and upgrades will be made to the highways which are believed to facilitate the running of electric vehicles efficiently and a successful financial model to leverage EVs for interstate travel will be considered. As per media reports, the 280km-long Delhi-Jaipur highway will facilitate EV buses and their operation by March 2023.

This pilot project is also being worked out to integrate an EV charging network of docks to enable the charging of e-buses on the Delhi-Jaipur highway.

In this regard, Abhijeet Sinha, programme director of NHEV said that no technology can be considered viable and useable until and unless the details have been worked out successfully like the financial and economic viability.

“We believe that this trial run will establish the viability of electric vehicles and their supporting infrastructure for the common people. In order for our country to successfully achieve carbon neutrality by 2070, EVs need to become a part of the common man’s vehicle,” he mentioned.

Furthermore, the trial run will focus on key aspects like the seat fare of electric buses, cost of operation of e-cars, maintenance of electric buses and cost of 1km highway upgradation to facilitate EVs. The project will also be estimating the average drop in carbon emissions with the help of EVs.

Abhijeet Sinha also added that “Upgrading a highway for EVs involves several factors, like ensuring that the service and technical assistance reach within 30 minutes in case of a breakdown. There is also a need for charging docks at suitable locations which must have a minimum utilisation of 30 per cent which is currently only 5 per cent in India.”

As for the cost of the upgrade, Sinha mentioned that it would be Rs. 50 lakh per km. He was also keen to point out that this trial run presented info that the operating costs of electric vehicles including the bus fare are less than 30 per cent when compared to their counterpart- A fossil fuel-based car.
